Masturbation Addiction: What It Is, What Can Cause It and How To Overcome It

Masturbation Addiction: What It Is, What Can Cause It and How To Overcome It

Do you have a masturbation addiction?

I’m gonna be straight-up frank with this: Healthy men like to spank the monkey as much as possible. No seriously, if we had it our way we’d build our whole schedule around how much rubbing and tugging we want all day. There’s nothing to be ashamed of having that physical urge to get off but we have to admit, it’s also one of those “too much is bad” things in life and I’m sure we’re all guilty of being aroused hours (or sometimes minutes!) after getting off. It’s like puberty all over again!

Having a stiffy and doing something about it is healthy and a sign of fertility but if you constantly find yourself wanting a release on multiple occasions, you may have a problem.

You might have a masturbation addiction.

    What is Masturbation Addiction?

Let’s first get this out of the way: Masturbation is not a sin. Okay, depending on your beliefs and intentions it might be but for probably 9/10 guys, it’s not. But there is such a thing as being addicted to masturbation. When masturbation becomes a method of escape, this may set the stage for an addictive pattern. Although masturbation is a healthy way to achieve sexual satisfaction, when it is used in the form of self-medication or as a way to deal with trauma or stressful situations, it may very easily grow into becoming an addiction. [1]

Masturbation addiction may be very secretive and isolating. A man (or woman) may compulsively masturbate with or without pornography and the behaviors may be very different. Some people may masturbate as part of their daily routine while others may binge masturbate. Binge masturbation involves spending several hours masturbating while watching porn or fantasizing.

For the most part, being addicted to masturbation is not hurting anyone but yourself. The problem is how you might be building your life around masturbation and usually makes you compromise your real-world priorities.

    • Lunch meeting with a new client? Maybe tomorrow, I need to get rid of this stiffy.
    • Does your wife want to eat dinner outside for your anniversary? But I just read my favorite pornstar released a new video today.
    • Do kids have to be picked up at school because of a strong typhoon? I’m sure they can wait an hour.
    • Can’t afford to be late again for work? I hate that job anyway.

These are just examples but they all say the same thing: Masturbation addiction wastes your time and contributes to a lower quality of life. The more you jerk off, the less time you have in doing things you know matter much more than self-pleasure.

    Causes of Masturbation Addiction

So why would someone become addicted to masturbation? Why do some couples become addicted to masturbation even though they have another option? Here are some of them:

    • Lack of Intimacy: Believe it or not. Some people need sex to fill the gap resulting from the need for intimacy. Many who are obsessed with sex have an unmet need for intimacy. Their parents might have ignored their needs when they were little children or they might have never felt loved before and that’s why their unconscious desire for sex became much higher. As mentioned, it’s normal for people to have a certain desire for sex but when this desire leads to excessive masturbation, there is another unmet need this person is trying to satisfy other than the need for sex itself.
    • Social Withdrawal: Social withdrawal and masturbation addiction are highly connected. [2]
Usually when the person is excessively shy, when he doesn’t have a good social life, or when he fails to get the approval of the members of the other sex then he might turn to masturbation addiction to fulfill such psychological needs.
    • Bad Moods & Life Problems: Some have developed the habit of escaping from problems instead of facing them. One of the methods used to escape from problems is masturbation. If you are one of those people then you will notice you masturbate whenever you feel bad, down, or sad.
    • Rejection: This might sound weird but it was found experiencing rejection, especially from the other sex, is one of the factors that motivate people to become addicted to masturbation.
    • Fear of Intimacy: Some people have developed a fear of intimacy as a result of going through poor past experiences with the other sex. Those are the people who become addicted to masturbation even though they are married.

    Negative Effects of Masturbation Addiction

Being a masturbation addict affects your health more than you think. The following is what could happen to you and your body if you’re unable to quit touching yourself each time you’re aroused.

    Physical Pain

    • Back Pain: Excessive masturbation (EM) reduces the production of oxytocin, DHEA, testosterone, and DHT. The depletion of these neurochemicals triggers a release of the inflammatory hormone prostaglandin E2, which is one source of lower back pain. [3]
    • Pain in the Groin: EM exhausts the pituitary-adrenal-testicular axis, which lowers oxytocin, DHEA, testosterone, and DHT production. Once these neurochemicals experience a reduction, the inflammatory hormone prostaglandin E2 creates pain near the groin and testicles. [4]
    • Prostatitis: Known as prostate inflammation, Prostatitis enlarges the prostate and impedes urinary flow and erectile capacity. Masturbation elevates DHT in the body. When too much DHT is present, the neurochemical inflame the prostate.

    Negative Sexual Effects

    • Erectile Dysfunction: Because EM depletes necessary hormones for sex, the body cannot experience a dearth of necessary neurochemicals. Instead, the body is left with a low supply that renders a male unable to maintain a strong erection. Not only that, if the person is the type who always refers to porn for arousal, his penis could end up becoming hotwired to get erect when the man is watching porn. This is porn-induced ED. If you think you have some sort of ED, check out our ED guide reviews to see what program would work for you.
    • Premature Ejaculation: EM depletes HGH, testosterone, dopamine, and serotonin, neurochemicals that strengthen both the endocrine system and parasympathetic nerves inside your body. Without these neurochemicals, the parasympathetic nerves that control an erection become weak, resulting in premature ejaculation. If you suffer from PE, check out our PE guide reviews and see which one works for you.

    Other Negative Effects

    • Fuzzy Vision: As funny as it sounds, EM might just make your vision weaker. Blurry vision or dark spots that cloud your eyesight can come from a deficiency of cGMP, nitric oxide, and acetylcholine in the visual sensory nerves. These deficiencies are intensified by excessive masturbation.
    • Chronic Fatigue: Cortisol, a steroid hormone meant to increase blood sugar and metabolism, experiences an increase in production after masturbation. The proliferation of the hormone causes an invariable feeling of exhaustion.
    • Insomnia: Melatonin is a neurochemical that induces sleep. Men who masturbate in excess see a depletion in melatonin which leads to insomnia.
    • Mood Swings: Cortisol elevates blood sugar to help manage stress. Except EM increases the production of cortisol to such high levels that it causes more stress. Meanwhile, low testosterone levels caused by EM result in mood swings.
    • Hair Loss: EM leads to excessive testosterone-DHT conversion. In response to the imbalance, the body produces cortisol, which induces high levels of prolactin and reduces DHEA, HGH, and testosterone production. The sudden shift in neurochemicals causes hair loss. [5]

Masturbation Addiction Supplements That Can Help

    Tongkat Ali

Let’s say you exhibit some of the symptoms here. The best way to fix them is of course by downplaying the rubbing game a bit but we can always ask Mother Nature for help. The likes of Tongkat Ali help promote testosterone production in the body. As mentioned a lot on our list, EM reduces testosterone which leads to a whole roster of health issues like hair loss, ED, PE, and Chronic Fatigue.

Tongkat ali nature’s most potent aphrodisiac and testosterone booster so taking a Tongkat Ali supplement should help you recover faster than you would if you went without it. Best of all, since it’s a natural source, it won’t make your body dependent on the herb at all. It will just help you get back to normal and once you’re feeling all Alpha again, you’ll only need this for the extra boost.

Maca is another herb known for its sex-enhancing and anti-stress benefits.

More than just a sex herb, Maca is also known [6] to help balance hormonal imbalances which are essential for men who masturbate too frequently. It’s an adaptogen which means it’s capable of reducing elevated levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) back to more manageable amounts. This, in turn, promotes more testosterone production.

We recommend you take Tongkat Ali and Maca together to maximize the benefits as well as help relieve you of some of the symptoms of masturbation addiction.

    How to Overcome Masturbation Addiction

As with any form of addiction, there are plenty of (natural) ways to rid yourself of this type of degrading behavior.

    1. Keep Yourself Distracted

    • Play sports. It takes discipline and persistence to excel at a sport. Develop an interest in running or swimming, or a group sport like soccer, football, basketball, or tennis. Also, any form of exercise will help you relieve tension, feel happier, and make you focus on your physicality in a positive way.
    • Find a new hobby, or cultivate a skill. Learning something that takes a while to master can refocus your brain on the delayed gratification of achieving goals instead of the instant gratification of masturbation.
    • Volunteer your time. Devote your energy to helping teens who’ve been less fortunate than you. This may include working at a shelter, tutoring low-income students, cleaning up blighted areas, or raising money for a cause. You’ll get an altruistic feeling from helping others, and you’ll have less time to stray from your goals.

    2. Plan Contingencies During Your Masturbation Times of Day

    • If you always masturbate when you get home from work, make sure to have a solid plan to stave off any boredom you may feel. If you have so little to do that your mind frequently wanders to sexual thoughts, occupy your schedule. You’ll find it gets easier to avoid masturbation if you’re too busy or tired to spare any energy for distractions.
    • If you want to masturbate in the morning, try to sleep with more than just one layer of clothing so touching yourself is more of an effort.

    3. Be Much More Sociable

Limit the times when you are likely to be home alone. If you tend to masturbate in the hour or two before your partner gets home from work, go for a walk during that time, or work on your projects in a coffee shop.

    • Even if all of your friends are busy, you may still limit your impulse to masturbate by going out in public. For instance, instead of watching the game at home by yourself, watch it at a sports bar. Even if you’re not hanging out with friends, you will not be alone, ultimately having no time for masturbation.

    4. Reduce or Outright Quit Watching Porn Completely

    • Consider installing porn-blocking software on your computer. Of course, you will know the password to bypass the blocking function. Just having it pop up will remind you of your priorities.
    • If you have the tendency to masturbate looking at porn on the computer, try moving your computer into a room where others can see you.
    • If you have a physical collection of porn, dispose of it ASAP.

    5. Know When To Seek Help

This will depend on your personal beliefs. If you’re religious, ask your religious leader for guidance. If you think a medical professional can help you, set up an appointment with one and commit to it.

Counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists are all trained to help people with varying levels of addiction. Start by seeing a therapist in your area. They can assess your addiction and refer you to more specialized help if necessary. Several treatment options are available, from cognitive-behavior therapy to medication.
